Fine Early 19th C American Federal Architectural Mirror With Eglomise Reverse Painting. Original Backboards, Original Mirror Below, Original Eglomise Panel Glass Above, Original Gold Gilt Decoration. Completely original in untouched condition. American Federal carved and gilt-wood mirror with overhanging cornice and ball decorations above column moldings with barley twist sides and beaded bottom accents with rosette adorned block corners. This Mirror represents an important time in American history when for the first time our young nation was capable of producing a fine mirror instead of having to import large plates of glass. This piece required the skills of multiple artisans: a cabinetmaker, gilder, artist, and glazier. A better mirror, like this one, would have most likely been commissioned for a household of wealth and stature. The elite often presented a bridal couple with a mirror like this.
